Something In The Cupcake Mix - Los Angeles 2009

Every October, I come out with a batch of extremely, limited edition, seasonal t-shirts, entitled; "There's Something In The Cupcake Mix!?".  It's usually 4 designs or so.  Each monster esque design is hand numbered up to a small amount.  All of the shirts are packaged in exclusive, hand numbered boxes as well.  Each cupcake mix box features hidden monster trivia and a scratch and sniff sticker that smells like frosting.  There are even sprinkles that you have to dust off your shirt when pulling it out of the special cupcake mix box!

I usually go all out for this event!  Hiring a professional make up artist to transform my employees and I, ghoulish cupcakes and other random goodies are given out, a live dj, and I go as far as pulling up to my shop when the doors open - in a Johnny Cupcakes hearse! Most of these shirts sell out the night of the release.  People travel from all over the U.S. and Canada, and have camped out 3-4 days prior to the release!

Melrose Ave
Grand Opening

August 2nd, 2008

During the winter time in Massachusetts, I was playing ping pong at my house. I was slightly depressed due to it getting dark super early, as well as it being freeeezing outside. While taking a mini break from ping pong, I thought I'd take a gander online for retail space in California. I had recently got a new, bigger warehouse with lots of room for growth. On top of that - for years we've been shipping tons of orders to the west coast, and it's always t-shirt weather there. With those things in mind, I found a spot and within two weeks from my ping pong break, I was in Los Angeles signing a lease on my new Los Angeles shop.

While working on my shop, I thought it would be fun to design it like something you'd see out of Willy Wonka or Disney. I wanted it to be more of an experience. I wanted to have a wall lined with vintage ovens that randomly open and shoot steam out, a giant 12 foot tall vintage oven that employees can walk in and out of to grab t-shirts from the stock room, pipes going through the store with frosting and oversized fake sprinkles oozing out of them, a stove top at the cash register area that emits fake flames, and more. So I did exactly what I had imagined / designed. I hired an amazing team of people to bring my ideas to life. Some who've even engineered + fabricated pieces for Disney, Universal, Jeff Koons, Charlie Ray, the Batman movies, etc..

There were people camping out 4 days prior to the shop opening. I've never seen a line so big in my life. When the doors opened, I had a 1950's era Johnny Cupcakes delivery truck pull up to the shop. I was nailed shut in a wooden crate that had to get pried open with a crow bar...and then BAM! The Johnny Cupcakes Los Angeles shop was history.
